Whether relished as a snack or dessert, they frequently appear at fairs, carnivals, and street food markets. How Are Churros Made?

Typically, they are crafted from a simple dough blend of flour, water, and salt, although milk can also be an added ingredient. This dough is skillfully piped through a “churrera,” a star-shaped syringe, which creates the distinct ridged pattern. Subsequently, they are deep-fried until they achieve a golden-brown crispness. Churros can vary in size and shape, ranging from elongated and slender to more compact and thick variations.

When purchased from street vendors, these treats are often sprinkled with a blend of sugar and cinnamon, adding sweet and to their flavour. When enjoyed on-site, they are commonly served alongside a warm sauce for dipping.

Where Do They Come From?

While churros are primarily associated with the Iberic peninsula (Spain and Portugal), the exact origin of this scrumptious treat remains subject to debate. Some accounts suggest that Portuguese sailors discovered a similar food in Northern China called “You Tiao” and brought it back with them, while others affirm that Spanish shepherds created them. They supposedly named them after the Churra sheep breed due to the resemblance of the fried pastry to the horns of these sheep. Finally, some historians trace the origin back to ancient civilizations like the Greeks or Romans, pointing out that similar recipes are mentioned in antique cookbooks.

Regardless of their precise origin, let’s go on a tour to explore different variations and recipes around the world.

In Latin American countries, churros tend to be thicker in size compared to their traditional Spanish counterparts, and are generously stuffed with various fillings, ranging from rich and caramel-like dulce de leche to creamy and indulgent chocolate. Additionally, tropical flavours like guava are also popular choices for filling, adding a fruity dimension to the treat. Stuffing the churros with these luscious fillings elevates the culinary experience, as each bite combines the satisfying crunch of the outer layer with the flavourful and often gooey interior.

Healthy Frying: What You Need to Know

Deep frying is a common culinary technique practiced across the globe. Restaurants and fast-food chains frequently use it as a quick and cost-effective way to prepare popular foods, including french fries, chicken, fish, and churros.

Unfortunately, despite their broad appeal, deep-fried foods are not typically associated with healthiness. In fact, consuming large amounts of deep-fried foods has been linked to several health issues, notably obesity. This is due to their high calories and trans fat content. When food is submerged in cooking oil, it loses water and absorbs fat, resulting in an increased calorie count. Moreover, fried foods are most often cooked in processed vegetable or seed oils, which usually contain trans fats before heating. The trans fat content further increases when heated to high temperatures during frying. Additionally, each time cooking oil is reused, its trans fat content becomes higher, exacerbating health risks.

Trans fats are difficult for the body to break down and absorb effectively, which can ultimately lead to adverse health effects. They have been especially linked to artery blockage and cardiovascular issues, as well as diabetes, obesity, and cancer. It is, therefore, essential to keep the consumption of deep-fried foods very moderate.

Luckily, there are healthier alternatives when it comes to deep-frying. Opting for oils mainly composed of saturated and monounsaturated fats is an excellent way to mitigate these health risks, as they remain stable at high temperatures. Coconut, olive, and avocado oils are among the safest and most stable for frying.

Another alternative is to explore healthy frying methods:

  • Oven-frying: This method involves baking foods at a very high temperature (around 450°F or 232°C), resulting in a crispy texture using little or no oil.
  • Air-frying: Another option is to fry foods using a hot air fryer. These devices circulate extremely hot air around the food, resulting in a crispy exterior and moist on the inside, similar to traditionally fried foods, using 70 to 80% less oil.

Churros have transcended their humble beginnings and become a global sensation. Whether enjoyed for breakfast with chocolate sauce, prepared in a healthy frying way, or as a unique dessert, their crispy exterior and soft interior continue to captivate taste buds around the world. So, the next time you bite into a churro, remember the rich history, the various iterations, and the culinary exploration that this simple yet extraordinary treat represents.
